Pala One Installer

Flash the firmware directly from your browser.

stable build: v3.0 switch channel

First time? Read the How to install and Troubleshooting guides below before clicking!

⚠️ Upgrading from v2.x to v3.x? The partition layout changed in v3.x to support wireless firmware updates. Books, apps, and custom screensavers stored on the device will be lost!

V1.2 board

Not sure which version you have? Flashing the wrong one won't brick the board — the e-ink panel just won't draw correctly. Try the other variant if the screen looks wrong after the first boot.

How to install

  1. Use a desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge, Opera. Firefox is unstable and may need you to approve its serial-device permission prompt before flashing.
  2. Plug your Pala One into your computer with a USB-C cable that carries data. If you are having issues, it may be that your cable is power-only. Try a different cable if the installer doesn't detect your board.
  3. Click an Install button above for your board and language. The browser will pop up a serial-port chooser.
  4. Pick your Pala One's serial port. On Windows it's usually not COM1. If you only see COM1, the board isn't plugged in or the cable doesn't carry data. On Mac / Linux, look for something like /dev/cu.usbmodem* or /dev/ttyACM*; skip Bluetooth and debug ports.
  5. Confirm Install in the dialog. Click Install, then Install again on the confirmation screen.

⚠️ Re-flashing an already-set-up device? Leave the Erase device checkbox unchecked — checking it wipes your books, settings, and saved Wi-Fi. If you are upgrading from v2.x to v3.x, books, apps, and screensavers will be lost regardless due to the partition table change.

  6. Wait ~2 minutes while it flashes. You'll see a progress bar. Don't unplug.
  7. Click "Connect to Wi-Fi" when offered, then enter your home Wi-Fi credentials. This lets your Pala One join your network so you can upload books to it from any device on the same Wi-Fi. You can skip this, as there is a fallback when there is no Wi-Fi configured or you are away from your network.
  8. You're done! To upload books, navigate to "Upload" on the Pala One's menu and enter the URL shown on the device into your web browser.

Troubleshooting

  1. Browser says Web Serial is not supported. Use desktop Chrome, Edge, Opera. Firefox is unstable and may need the serial permission prompt approved before the installer can connect.
  2. The board does not appear in the serial-port list. Try a different USB-C cable, then unplug and reconnect the board. If it still does not show up, the cable may be power-only.
  3. The install dialog stops or fails partway through. Close the dialog, reconnect the board, and try the same install button again. Make sure you selected the correct V1.1 or V1.2 variant.
  4. The screen looks wrong after the first boot. Flash the other board variant (V1.1 or V1.2) and reboot. The wrong firmware variant will not brick the board, but the display may not render correctly.
  5. You're upgrading from an older firmware and want to keep your data. The installer warns you when data is at risk. For v2.x to v3.x upgrades, books, apps, and screensavers are lost because the partition layout changed.
  6. The device appears stuck after flashing, sometimes in a screensaver or menu and no longer accepts input. This has been reported with Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, and the web flasher. It does not happen on every flash, but when it does occur, reflashing the device again usually resolves it.
